My friend Neal organised a trip to Blenheim Palace this autumn.

We struggled till late afternoon then I caught a nice pike on my ultralight lure rod.

It was just about a double on a 3" banjo lure. A 4" kopyto was next line of attack.

My biggest ever, 3lb 5oz. Very happy.

The lure bug has bitten hard, even joined the Lure Anglers Society.

We were the only anglers there, such a beautiful place. Don't understand why?

Big juicy lobworm under a float using my old speedia centerpin. This Carp had designs on the worm, no doubt shoved every perch in the area out of the way!
Too many Carp about these days, did make my reel sing though!
Went Grafham water last week, cold east wind. Not very condusive to good fishing. Caught three rainbows and lost three. Dragging the bottom on a di 7 I'm afraid. At least the trout knew I was fishing for them! Perch are obviously not as intelligent as trout.

I have said I will take him trout fishing so I thought I would put some fly kit in for him to practice with.
Now for someone who's never cast a fly before he was soon getting the hang of it. He only hooked the bank behind once and it was a few feet above our heads!
I turned my back for a few seconds and he caught this jack pike. Think he might be hooked on fluff chucking now. I have given him an old fibatube rod and a speedex reel to get him started. Love the speedex reel why are they not still made?
We were using German made Authanic wire which is more like a braid. Brilliant stuff, soft supple and won't kink. Also knots very well.
I think if every angler encouraged one youngster a year the future of our sport would be much safer....
Stumbled across these marvelous pike flies tied in a style that could convert to trout and many other types of fishing. I think some Bass flies tied like this will work well.
Not sure its a new idea however a big thanks to the "Piketrek boys" for inventing the flies.
He was a good friend who I will never forget. I have lots of great memories and wish I could remember half his stories. I used to go shooting with him and have Trout , Coarse and Sea fished with him and all I can say is he was damned good at all types of fishing.
Not many anglers these days are all rounders, which i think is a shame as you learn from each of the disciplines.
Arthur was best known for his trout fishing and so to the point of this post.
His wife Pauline and Grandson James said I can photograph some of his fly patterns and put them on here or somewhere on the net so people can see how the originals were tied. I spoke to one of the Fulling Mill team who said Arthur used to ring them up to tell them off if they had messed about with his pheasant tail nymph.
I just thought it would be a shame to let a bit of Angling history so to speak slip by. His book will always be there to read for future anglers, however I hope to get some of his "secret" flies.......only joking. He did not hide his specials, only from me!
Tied as the pheasant tail version but with Heron herl.
I started it with good intentions however for various reasons have let it slip badly. Will try to keep it going this year as it looks like i may have time to actually go fishing!
Been at the vice a bit, hard to keep the incentive even though I got a new vice for Xmas. Just done a shrimp pattern after seeing a good one in fishing and fly tying mag. Nothing new but might be worth a swim. Blending the seals fur was a bit of a nightmare, pinch of this sprinkle of that. A couple of u.v. products in there, hope the fish like it.
If the old ones don't work, tough. Although every now and then i sit at the vice and create something and then the doubt sets in!
Will try it next time out, to be honest the only bit i like is the dyed squirrel thorax. I have quite a collection of spanflex but prefer fur and feather. Bit of a "luddite " when it comes to realistic flies.
Michael Edwards of Orvis has very kindly donated a Western 3 rod. 9' 6" for a six weight. I bought a 10' #7 when they first came out and love mine. plus the 25 year guarantee!
Gareth of St.Georges sporting is donating a fly logic reel worth £85, disc drag. looks very nice.
Not quite sure yet how much a bench will cost, if we don't raise enough money for one might be best to split the money between the two charities. Or maybe get a plaque put up in the lodge.
Be great if loads of people turn out!
Hope to get out on Saturday, choice of Pitsford, Elinor and Ringstead. So mild today bet it changes for the weekend!
Just must add congratulations to Richard and Allie on the birth of their daughter Isabella yesterday weighing 5lb.
Got some chemical pocket warmers so may just cast out and stick hands in pockets, will put some down my waders if it stays this cold! I will post on here if we catch anything. there are three rogues going possibly to Elinor. Percey has got so many rods and lines that he is taking them all to find out what line casts best on what rod, bet he forgets to take a marker pen!
James Cove is an unknown quantity who comes from excellent trout fishing stock. Think we may have to handicap him somehow.....me i will probably struggle. I like to see fish moving, not that keen on "fishing the water". "smelly nets " indeed!Dave Oateshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16331124975971703603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-742539662701773840.post-36453725372041420452010-02-13T22:29:00.000+00:002010-02-13T22:29:21.081+00:00stick flyBeen tying a few. cant get motivated, need to be in the mood .
This hares ear stick fly is my confidence point fly early season. I lead it with lead foil from a dentists x-rays.
it is thin stuff and does not bulk the body up too much. the thorax is d.f.m. yellow seals fur.
It's a good fly for creeping along the bottom, tied to copy some caddis larvae i found in a sand and gravel pit.
their cases were made of sand.

Also found caddis that had used flakes of gloss paint from a sunken boat! but thats too long a story.....
If the bottom of the lake is clean enough inch it hard along it so puffs of silt / sand come up. no fish will resist!
a friend of mine called "Rocket " kept getting followed in by a brown trout that would not take. i borrowed his rod and as it followed in again I stopped the retrieve so the stick fly hit the deck. then twitched it a few times, the brownie turned on its side to swallow it. Worth a try.Dave Oateshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16331124975971703603noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-742539662701773840.post-39431446249428088772010-01-27T18:06:00.004+00:002010-01-27T18:22:15.727+00:00red grub hooks.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqoxHhURfrr8XXts2dp0Cmp312vgLXBYuUm8qNQ9Zxm990ctJCqoOEsXkBYENXjOQqKIPyDkXxHlxFf1hFRI5TdJszwXJgdQnxGW8uhXQCBH7wkzpV1Gmc4vgVX92UACcbKg7FHIOpKlbn/s400/P1010900.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431486000379123986" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt9YreVtYEmgSKrqI3euOM4MzkyKVlj3ZuBEAedtHuf_Gj2GesiWu5ic08RVN77t5DELrzZWI2XrkfwdtvNnde4mCaiwNb2PnTdSeLpqMDVZuZEWpPEEE3-Zni9xejiuktWnPkLB-WIFpe/s400/P1010889.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431483493615533010" />
I was in eyebrook tackle shop the other day, looking for hooks to tie large pheasant tails with when i found some size 14 "jardine grub/ sedge hooks.
looked great for bloodworm larvae and buzzers, was hoping the red would show through. which i think it does.
also tried to do a red diddy type of thing, not sure if i like it or not.
must be lots more uses for those hooks yet!Dave Oateshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16331124975971703603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-742539662701773840.post-70354677646442148852010-01-25T20:23:00.002+00:002010-01-25T20:32:53.412+00:00stil no idea what i am doing!trying to add tools etc. to the blog.... help.
got the moon phase tool up and running for the sea anglers and the barbel anglers who believe in all that stuff.
been to eyebrook tackle shop and found some fantastic red hooks. chironomid, midge or buzzer larvae.
